Clarity
A grading scale measuring the presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes in a diamond.
Definition
Diamond clarity grades the presence and visibility of internal inclusions (crystals, feathers, clouds) and external blemishes (scratches, nicks). The GIA clarity scale has 11 grades: FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1/VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included), VS1/VS2 (Very Slightly Included), SI1/SI2 (Slightly Included), and I1/I2/I3 (Included). Grading is performed under 10x magnification.
Why It Matters for Ring Design
For most shapes, eye-clean stones (no inclusions visible to the naked eye) fall in the VS1-SI1 range. Spending on clarity above VS1 in brilliant cuts provides minimal visual benefit — the difference is only visible under magnification. For emerald and Asscher cuts (step cuts), upgrade to VS2 or VS1 as inclusions are much more visible.
