Stone Cuts

Pear Cut

A teardrop-shaped brilliant combining the oval and marquise, worn with the point toward the fingertip.

Definition

The pear cut, or teardrop brilliant, combines the rounded end of an oval with the pointed tip of a marquise. It features 57–58 facets and is typically worn with the point facing toward the fingernail. Like the oval, it creates an elongating effect on the finger and appears larger per carat than a round.

Why It Matters for Ring Design

Asymmetrical fancy shapes like the pear require skilled setting work to protect the point. A V-tip prong at the point is essential. Length-to-width ratio of 1.45–1.75 is generally considered ideal.
