Stone Cuts

Heart Cut

A romantic modified brilliant shaped like a heart, most impactful at 0.5 carats and above.

Definition

The heart cut is a modified brilliant created by splitting the top of a pear shape into two lobes. It requires exceptional cutting skill to achieve perfect symmetry between the two halves of the heart. The shape is most recognizable and visually striking at 0.50 carats and above — smaller stones lose the definition of the cleft.

Why It Matters for Ring Design

Symmetry is paramount with heart cuts. The two lobes must be equal, and the cleft at the top must be well-defined. A three-prong V-tip setting (one at each point, one at the center cleft) is the most common choice.
