Lab-Grown Diamond

A diamond with identical physical, chemical, and optical properties to mined diamonds, grown in a controlled laboratory environment.

Definition

Lab-grown diamonds (also called synthetic, laboratory-created, or man-made diamonds) are real diamonds produced in high-tech facilities rather than mined from the earth. Created using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes, they have the same crystal structure, hardness (10 on Mohs scale), and optical properties as natural diamonds. The FTC confirmed in 2018 that the term 'diamond' applies to both mined and lab-grown stones.

Why It Matters for Ring Design

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50–80% less than comparable natural diamonds, allowing clients to maximize carat size and quality within budget. They offer a compelling environmental and ethical story. However, their long-term resale value is significantly lower than natural diamonds — advise clients accordingly based on their priorities.
